"Fresh Only, Please!" Series - Ep. #0002: Investigating Chicago's Digital Divide

In Episode #0002 of “Fresh Only, Please!”, student participants in “THE SUMMER PROGRAM” continue investigating the digital divide within Chicago’s West Side by using research tools from The Markup - a nonprofit publication focused on challenging technology to serve the public good. The Markup’s recent analysis revealed that the worst internet deals from major internet service providers (ISP’s) disproportionately fell upon the poorest, most racial and ethnically diverse, and historically redlined neighborhoods in all but two of the 38 cities in their nationwide investigation. In response to this, their team also created a participatory blueprint for citizens to test for disparities in their own communities—which our students have been using to conduct their own data investigation. Our Digital Stewards In-Training also traveled to connect with our next community organization in the Connect D.O.T.S. (Digital Outreach to Transform Safety) cohort, Earth’s Remedies. Continue following along as our students organize to create a more equitable digital ecosystem for the City of Chicago.
